It’s a hard number to pin down but the answer in any case is “far too many.” According to UNESCO’s most recent data, 62 million school-age girls are currently out of school around the world. When Girl Rising began, that number was 66 million. So progress is being made–which thrills us–but there is a long way to go–which inspires us to keep working and keep spreading the word about the transformative power of girls’ education.

In India nearly 25 percent of girls leave school before completing Class 5, and more than 40 percent of girls in India don’t make it through secondary school.
